These 5 steps will help you have stop long-lasting odors from developing or permanent pet urine stains ruining your couch from the occasional urine accident.
These tips can also be used for people urine. If you have ever had children, you know it’ll happen at least once!
Step 1: Flood the area with water.
As soon as you know your dog peed on your couch you need to dilute the urine with a glass of tap water. If you have hard water, you will want to use bottled or filtered water in place of tap water. This is very important because hard water can leave it's own discoloration.
Step 2: Apply a towel
Apply firm pressure to a folded towel and to absorb the water and urine. You've held the towel there long enough when the area is still be damp but not soaking wet.
Step 3: Immediately saturate the urine stain again, this time with an enzyme based urine neutralizer. Bac-out is our preferred over the counter green cleaner. It’s great to always have on- hand just in-case.
Step 4: Get a new towel, apply again.
Fold a new dry towel 2-4 times and again apply firm pressure. You can also put something heavy on top, for example a box or books to help absorb. Let's be real, no one wants to press for more than 30 seconds.
Step 5: Call a professional
Chances are if your dog went to the bathroom this time, they’ll do it again if they can still smell the urine. Bac-out is a great product, but dogs (and cats!) have a great sense of smell. Professional steam cleaning will reach deep into your couches and chair to remove remaining traces of urine stains and odor.
